Principles of Vaastu
Vaastu has two distinct parts
- Vaastu of a plot.
- Vaastu of a buildings.
Both are equally important. Before a plot is being selected the Vaastu of the plot has to be inspected, If the plot has any vaastu defects, It certainly has to be corrected.
- Vaastu of Plot
Considering Vaastu of a plot various parameters like the shape, location, surroundings....Lets consider some aspects prior of buying a plot as per respective needs.a) For Houses
- A rectangular plot is good, Breadth and Length ratio should not be more than 1:2 (Very important)
- A triangular shape is not advisable.
- If the vaastu defeats (if any) cannot be corrected, it should be rejected.
- It should be close to a square to be an ideal one.
- Round shape and all other odd shapes are also not good.
- In the surrounding areas, their shall be no heavy mechanised workshops, No harsh sounds, No slaughter practices, No high tension electric station or poles.
b) For Industrial houses and business concerns

- Ideally all angles should be close to 90 degrees.
- North West angle should be close to 90 degree or little more. It should not be less than 90 degree.
- North East angle should be close to 90 or less but never in excess of 90 degrees.
- South East angle should be close to 90 or little more but not less than 90 degrees.
- The South West angle should be 90 degree. This is very important.
d) Location and Direction of Plot
The significance of the location of any plot is very important but in the terms of its directions as to which side is the plot facing? or, The East and North facing sites are to be preferred to those facing West and South. Outmost care has to be taken for west and south facing plots while designing the house or work place. As some directions are positive in nature while some have a negative impact.e) Plots having two or more roads
- North and West roads are always good.
- Ideally the plot should have roads on all four sides.
- North and East roads are the best.
- It is good to have more than one road.
- South and West roads are good for business people.
- South and East roads are good for women.
Levels of a plot
- The ground level in the North and East should be lowest in the plot.
- Levels in the South-East and North-West should be more or less equal.
- North levels should be lower than South.
- South-East and North-West level should be higher than the North-East, but lower than the South-West levels.
- The levels in east should be lower than that of the west.
- The ground level should be high in the South and West.
- Any pond, tank, well, valley or ditches towards South-West, outside the plot might bring misfortune; While Ponds, Tanks or Rivers in North or East or North-East of the plotyield, good results.
- A high building built towards South or West or South-West, of our plot is considered good for prosperity.
Wells
These days a well is seldom built but incase if it has to built then before the construction of the house is taken up don't forget considering these points.
- A well in the North-West or South-East is also not good.
- A well in the West or South or South-West is taboo.
- A well in the center of the building is also not advisable.
- A well opposite to the gate or main door or opposite to doors opening outside, is not advisable.
- East side well means it should be in the first half towards east.
Vaastu of building
Any structure whether residential, commercial, or industrial, public to be built, If Vaastushastra principles are considered, It certainly would be beneficial. The main points to be kept in mind are -
- The building should be built leaving open space on all four sides.
- More open space should be left in North side of the plot and less space in the south, Similarly more open space should be left in the East than West side of the plot.
- The building height should be more on the South and West.
- The height or level of the building should be less in North and East
- On a multi storied building, terrace should be left towards north or east, not towards south or west.
- Balconies should be towards East or North.
- More window openings should be towards East and North.
- Less window openings should be towards West and South.
- Thicker walls should be built on West and South side.
- Thinner walls should be built on East and North side.
- Doors and openings should be more towards North and East side.
- Doors should be less in number towards West or South.
- The main door (entrance door) should be wide and heighted than any other doors.
- The compound walls of South and West should be thicker and more in height than those of North & East.
- Gate should be on the North East direction, depending upon the road whether it is North or East.
- For south road facing house, the gate should be in south or south-east and not on the south-west.
- For a West road facing house, the gate should be in the West or North-West and not in South-West.
- The South-West room should be the master bedroom.
- South-East room should be kitchen.
- North-East room should ideally be prayer room.
Solution for West Direction
Additional floor/s should be constructed in Southwest or South or West zone with terraces towards North & East.
South and West side walls should be constructed in heavy stone masonry. North-South length of a dwelling greater than East-West width
Width wise the Plot, Vaastu, and individual rooms should have North-South length greater than the East-West.
While in commercial enterprises - the Chairperson's (key-persons) should have offices in Southwest zone, Administration, legal, accounts personnel in Southeast zone, products department in Northwest zone, library, cafeteria, gym & relaxation rooms towards Northeast zone.Solution for Northeast Direction
For any Vaastu should be placed, in the Southwest zone of a plot/dwelling with excess site margins/open spaces towards North and East directions.
Ground slopes should incline from South to North and West to East, thereby making South & West zones relatively thoughtful/deep. West point at higher level than East point South point placed at a higher level than North point
The doors and all window openings should be placed towards North and East, as far as possible; And openings towards West & South zones should be avoided if possible.
The inclination of roofs should generally slope towards East and North, placing West and South points at a higher level. Solution for Southwest Direction.
The kitchen should be located in Southeast zone with and the cooking/cook facing East.
All heavy loads and huge cabinets/chest should be placed in relative South and West zone of a room.
